Drawing from personal experiences and the latest research, we delve into the profound impact of working with chronic illness in entrepreneurship. This episode is all about shifting the narrative around how we approach business as women living with chronic conditions. We discuss the importance of recognizing that our health should dictate our work style, not the other way around. By challenging the status quo of 'always being on,' we encourage listeners to embrace their unique rhythms and to create business growth and business models that accommodate their health needs.
The conversation includes strategies for reconnecting with one's passion and purpose in business, ultimately leading to more aligned and successful ventures. We also introduce our new initiative, 'Rooted Sales,' designed to help our community rediscover their strengths and craft sales strategies that feel authentic and natural to them. As we wrap up, we invite everyone to join us on this journey of transformation, where we prioritize both personal well-being and professional success.
Takeaways:
- Navigating chronic illness while starting a business requires tailored strategies that prioritize health and well-being.
- Many traditional business models are not designed to support the unique needs of entrepreneurs with chronic conditions.
- Embracing your individuality and personal story can significantly enhance your business's appeal and effectiveness.
- Burnout is a common challenge for entrepreneurs with chronic illness, but it doesn't signify personal failure, just the need for a different approach.

Speaker BWelcome to Business with Chronic Illness, the globally ranked podcast for women living with chronic illness who want to start and grow a business online.
Speaker BI'm your host, Nikita Williams and I went from living a normal life to.
Speaker CAll of a sudden being in constant.
Speaker BPain with no answers to being diagnosed with multiple chronic illnesses and trying to make a livable income, I faced the challenge of adapting traditional business advice to fit my unique circumstances with chronic illness.
Speaker BFeeling frustrated and more burned out than I already was while managing my chronic illness to becoming an award winning coach with a flexible, sustainable online coaching business, I found the surprisingly simple steps to starting and growing a profitable business without compromising my health or my peace.
Speaker BSince then, I've helped dozens of women just like you learn how to do the same.
Speaker BIf you're ready to create a thriving business that aligns with your lifestyle and well being, you're in the right place.
Speaker BTogether, we're shifting the narrative of what's possible for women with chronic illness and how we make a living.
Speaker BThis is Business with Chronic Illness.
Speaker DWe're going to be talking about working with chronic illness as an entrepreneur and working with chronic illness in general.
Speaker DWhether you are working a 9 to 5 or you have a W2 and you're trying to decide whether or not.
Speaker CYou are going to start a side.
Speaker DHustle, or maybe you've been thrown in the cusp of needing to work for yourself because of losing your job, leaving your job, exiting your job, whatever the case may be, and you're finding that.
Speaker CYou'Re not really sure how traditional business.
Speaker DAdvice is going to be able to.
Speaker CThat's going to be sustainable for you.
Speaker DLiving with chronic illness and you might be already feeling tired, you might be already feeling fatigued, you might be already feeling like I have consumed so much information and I'm not even sure I am who I am anymore because I'm.
Speaker CTrying to do everything, quote, unquote, right.
Speaker CThis episode's for you.
Speaker CYou're gonna hear me say something that.
Speaker DI have said a thousand bajillion times on the show.
Speaker DIt's not your fault.
Speaker DWe have been put in a system.
Speaker CWhere the conditioning around how we do.
Speaker DWork is built on always, on being always on quote, unquote, like, quote unquote, always being on an ableist assumption that vigor and strength is infinite or it needs to be.
Speaker CAnd therefore if you aren't, you aren't.
Speaker DThe, you can't succeed, right?
Speaker DAnd when you're navigating chronic illness, that, that with that in mind, with that system in mind, and you're receiving you know, I want to say, like you're receiving coaching or ideas or strategy with that being kind of, kind of the foundation of how people view business that taxes your nervous system before your marketing even hits, before you even hit publish, right?
Speaker CSo before you even do the thing.
Speaker DSo no wonder you're feeling exhausted and you feel like conversions aren't happening, like you aren't getting clients.
Speaker DYou're doing everything right, though.
Speaker DYou're showing up on social media, you're doing the blog posts, you're doing the podcast interviews, you're doing the marketing on.
Speaker CAll the platforms, you're doing reels and.
Speaker DCarousels, you're doing TikToks.
Speaker CYou've decided, oh, I don't want to.
Speaker DDo social media anymore, so I'm going.
Speaker CTo just focus on long form content now.
Speaker CYou're doing all of that.
Speaker CYou're starting a YouTube, you're being on substack, you're doing LinkedIn.
Speaker DYou started a business, most likely not to be a quote unquote, marketer, but to be a creative, to be a coach, to help people to do something right.
Speaker DAnd part of the job is, is.
Speaker CBeing, quote unquote, a marketer.
Speaker CAnd in that space, the key piece.
Speaker DThat often I have found that slips out of the door the quickest is you.
Speaker DYour expertise, your sparkle, your dazzle, if you will, goes out of the door.
Speaker DBecause we go into, I am not a marketer and so I need someone.
Speaker CTo tell me how to do a thing right.
Speaker CAnd we don't bring us into, into the picture.
Speaker DWe heavily rely on what other people say will work.
Speaker DAnd it's not that it doesn't work.
Speaker CBut the key that's missing is that people are missing.
Speaker CTeaching people how to bring themselves, who they are, their energy into a thing.
Speaker DAnd on top of that, if you're living with chronic illness, there's this underlining.
Speaker CExpectation that the way we run our businesses, to quote, unquote, sell and market, is coming from the space of being.
Speaker DAble to just push through and sacrifice.
Speaker CUntil you've paid your dues.
Speaker DAnd that model doesn't work for the majority and it doesn't work for the minority either.
Speaker DBut that's the idea, right?
Speaker DWith AI coming into the scene.
Speaker DAnd it is in the scene is not even coming.
Speaker CIt is fully here, y' all.
Speaker DAI is here.
Speaker DIt is not just coming, it's not.
Speaker CTrinkling, it is here.
Speaker DAnd you might be even more seeing content that sounds like everybody else, everyone's using a strategy or whatever and it's all starting to sound the Same, it's.
Speaker CStarting to look the same, it's starting to do the same.
Speaker CThe challenge is going to be how.
Speaker DAre you bringing you to the thing.
Speaker DBecause no matter how many robots there are, there's going to be a part.
Speaker COf your energy, how you show up, who you are, your values, your story.
Speaker DYour lived experiences that are going to make the difference of supporting and building.
Speaker CA community for your business.
Speaker DAnd it doesn't have to be a non nervous system friendly way, right?
Speaker CHere's the thing.
Speaker DTraditional business advice is built on, as I mentioned before and always on body.
Speaker CJust be able to do things all of the time.
Speaker CBut when you're navigating chronic illness, that.
Speaker DModel does not support your nervous system for sustainable growth for yourself or for your business.
Speaker DAnd because of that, and because you.
Speaker CHave disconnected from yourself in that way, you're not making sales because you're disconnected from your message, your energy and your unique point of view.
Speaker CSo even in the view of using.
Speaker DAI to support you and your business, if you are not connected to your.
Speaker CMessage, your energy and your unique point.
Speaker DOf view, you're not going to convert.
Speaker DYou're not going to convert.
Speaker DSo strategy of not connecting back to you does not help you create the results.
Speaker DOkay, so here's why you feel tired and unheard.
Speaker CYour nervous system is overload.
Speaker DHustle hacks, spike cortisol and focus nose dives.
Speaker CThis is scientifically how and why you.
Speaker DAre feeling tired and unheard.
Speaker DYour nervous system is overloaded.
Speaker CThere is potentially some internalized ableism.
Speaker DI should be productive at all times.
Speaker DWhispers guilt every time you rest, every time you're feeling tired, every time you take a break.
Speaker DThere's an internal ableism of I should.
Speaker CBe productive all of the time.
Speaker CI should be doing all of the time.
Speaker DAnd then there's what I'm going to call the template tangle.
Speaker DLayering everyone else's voice into doing a strategy so that it converts.
Speaker CIt's actually silencing you.
Speaker CWhat's yours, what makes the thing actually convert.
Speaker DSo how does this look like in real time?
Speaker DYou've bought the, you've bought the courses, you're posting, you're showing up to show up.
Speaker CYou're using AI and those templates and repurposing content.
Speaker DYou're doing all the right things, but.
Speaker CThe sales are still slow, the clarity still cloudy.
Speaker CAnd maybe if you're really honest, you're.
Speaker DEven kind of bored a little bit.
Speaker CWith what you're creating.
Speaker CIt doesn't even sound like you anymore.
Speaker CYour business doesn't feel like you.
Speaker DDoesn't feel like it aligns with your values anymore.
Speaker DIt's a thing.
Speaker CIt's a quote unquote J O B.
Speaker DAnd you, maybe you want a job, maybe you want a job, but do.
Speaker CYou want this job to affect your.
Speaker DNervous system in a way where you.
Speaker CCan'T create sustainable growth?
Speaker DSo this is not a strategy problem.
Speaker CA lot of you are looking to.
Speaker DSolve this with a strategy a go to an AI prompt, but you've lost your voice.
Speaker DAnd that is the problem.
Speaker DAnd I say this with like knowing I have clients that have experienced this.
Speaker DI have gone through this multiple times and I feel like there's not people talking about this enough.
Speaker DThat's where I want to help you.
Speaker DBut I want to also like round into some research that I've been doing specifically about working with chronic illness because there isn't a lot of people talking about this.
Speaker CAnd you might be feeling completely alone.
Speaker DIn this process because you're thinking I'm not doing enough.
Speaker CBut here's what I want you to keep some numbers in mind.
Speaker DThis is from different places of research that I've done.
Speaker DA lot of this that I'm going.
Speaker CTo share with you comes from the.
Speaker DHarvard Business Survey working with chronic illness.
Speaker DIt was a really interesting survey that collected I believe, over 200 people for this survey.
Speaker DAnd there is already just not enough research when it comes to living with chronic illness and making a living working.
Speaker DBut we're going to take what we have.
Speaker C60% of US adults already manage at least one chronic health condition.
Speaker CAnd long Covid, since COVID happened, will push this higher.
Speaker CThere is still, maybe there's still some research being done on this.
Speaker CLet's hope.
Speaker DBut back in, in 2021, that was.
Speaker CThe information that we were seeing.
Speaker CSo 60% of U.S.
Speaker Cadults already manage.
Speaker DAt least one Chron health condition.
Speaker DAnd after or during COVID we know.
Speaker CThat there is a chronic condition connected to long Covid that's adding to this.
Speaker DSo this is something to keep in mind.
Speaker CYour chronic illness isn't a niche.
Speaker CIt's half the talent pool that's out there in business or even in the workplace.
Speaker DSo strategies that demand uninterrupted effort are.
Speaker CAlready kind of crazy and obsolete.
Speaker CIt doesn't make sense because we're all human.
Speaker DThe majority of us are navigating that.
Speaker CPeople with disabilities are nearly twice as.
Speaker DLikely to be self employed.
Speaker D10.6% of US small business owners identify as disabled.
Speaker CSo flexibility is why many of us start businesses.
Speaker DYet Most business models a 24,7 hustle, which is crazy.
Speaker DBecause again, the majority of those of us starting a business are looking for.
Speaker CFlexibility in the way that we run our business.
Speaker DHere's something that I thought was really.
Speaker CInteresting in the concept of thinking about, can you make a living as a.
Speaker DPerson living with chronic illness, building a business and having, you know, being an entrepreneur?
Speaker CThe global disability market controls 13 trillion in disposable income.
Speaker DSo this was taken from the SBA.gov.
Speaker CSo building access isn't charity, it's smart growth.
Speaker CSo for those of us struggling with.
Speaker DCharging what we need to charge and making prices that are sustainable, keep 13 trillion in disposable income in mind.
Speaker COkay?
Speaker DAnd lastly, mental health has a huge effect.
Speaker DThere was a in Psychology Today UCF.
Speaker CStudy where it says entrepreneurs are significantly.
Speaker DMore prone to anxiety, depression and loneliness than general population.
Speaker CAnd I would say just from me.
Speaker DTalking to so many women with chronic illness, this is an added piece to.
Speaker CThe fact that you live with chronic illness.
Speaker CWe are already more prone to have struggles with our mental health and our load with that.
Speaker CAnd so the just the fact of being an entrepreneur can double that load.
Speaker DSo burnout, for those of us who.
Speaker CFeel like burnout and feeling exhausted and dealing with all of the mental load of what's going on in your personal life and life and living with chronic.
Speaker DIllness and being an entrepreneur who feel like it is a personal failing when you quote unquote, can't keep up, burnout isn't a moral failing.
Speaker CIt's a predictable side effect of the founder role, amplified when you're also managing.
Speaker DA body that's negotiating pain, that's needing more rest.
Speaker DSo we have to find another way, right?
Speaker DAnd so in our attempt to try to find another way, many of us have gone so far that we've disconnected from the thing that actually helps businesses grow the most.
Speaker DLike the fastest and the the most, I would say sustainable way is your genius, your story, your strengths.
Speaker DAnd so that's why I created Rooted Sales.
Speaker DI've been in this journey personally recently trying to figure out in my new normal because I've got new things going on with my and my energy and.
Speaker CMy capacity and trying to figure out.
Speaker DA way to be able to support.
Speaker CClients and also build sustainably and keep.
Speaker DTrue to my values and my strengths.
Speaker CAnd after weeks of pain and fog, I finally had a moment of clarity.
Speaker DAnd I realized I didn't want to.
Speaker CCreate another webinar or a zoom style.
Speaker DWorkshop challenge kind of thing.
Speaker CI wanted to create something live but.
Speaker DLow pressure and something supportive.
Speaker CAnd going back to that key point about mental health load.
Speaker CI wanted to really even more so lean into the community aspect that we are all needing.
Speaker CBecause of the journey we've decided to.
Speaker DBe on as an entrepreneur and then.
Speaker CAlso living with chronic illness, that's not something we choose.
Speaker DBut being an entrepreneur and working for ourselves and starting a business and being our own founders and CEOs, we need.
Speaker CCommunity to hold space for what the.
Speaker DNuance of that looks like.
Speaker DSo that brought me to I want something more supportive and just deep.
Speaker CSomething that brings you back to your own voice, your own message, your own.
Speaker DValues and the sales that come when you finally feel like yourself again and.
Speaker CYou convert with more ease.
Speaker DAnd you can use those tools like.
Speaker CThe AI and the templates and all of those things without removing the most important part that makes those things work, which is you.
Speaker CSo I created Rooted Sales.
Speaker CIt's a five day live audio series delivered in a private signal chat along.
Speaker DWith inbox access to this, where you.
Speaker CWill rebuild your sales rhythm from the inside out.
Speaker CSo who is this for and what is it?
Speaker DThis is for you.
Speaker CIf you feel like your content used.
Speaker DTo hit and now it doesn't, you're.
Speaker CTired of pushing strategies that don't feel like you.
Speaker CYou're doing all the things, quote unquote, but still not making consistent sales or sales at all.
Speaker DOr you're not converting and you're craving.
Speaker CMore peace in your process and more profit with less burnout each day.
Speaker DIn this five day Rooted series, I'll share one short, powerful voice note live.
Speaker CTo help you reconnect with yourself and.
Speaker DYour sales and your business and your.
Speaker CWhy and your values.
Speaker CYou'll walk away knowing exactly how to.
Speaker DStart showing up again, rooted in your story and values, not just the strategy.
Speaker CAnd this is going to apply even.
Speaker DIf you have decided, I don't want to be on social platforms anymore, I.
Speaker CWant to be in person doing events.
Speaker CWe're going to bring you back into.
Speaker DThe mix of this and yes, we're.
Speaker CGoing to talk about the role of AI.
Speaker DAnd with that it plays into all.
Speaker CThis because if you've been using AI.
Speaker DAnd still feel exhausted and or you're.
Speaker CResisting it, it's because you feel like.
Speaker DYou don't want to lose yourself even more.
Speaker CAnd that's why you're resisting AI.
Speaker DOr that's why you've been using AI.
Speaker CBecause you feel like you've lost yourself in some way.
Speaker DYou're trying to chase it and find.
Speaker CIt and hope there's a quick fix for it.
Speaker CBut AI can't help you find you.
Speaker DYou okay, so this series is especially on that first day.
Speaker DIt's going to be helpful for you.
Speaker DThis matters now because you don't need more to do.
Speaker CSo many of us are like scrambling.
Speaker DAnd trying to learn all this stuff and trying to do more, but you need to really reconnect with what makes you different because that's what is selling.
Speaker CAnd has always sold.
Speaker DBut even more so now we are in a new era of marketing.
Speaker DPeople don't buy based on just value anymore.
Speaker DThey buy based on emotional resonance, vibing.
Speaker COn alignment on your story and on.
Speaker DConnection based on values.
Speaker CThis isn't just a feel good experience.
Speaker CThis strategy, if you will, is rooted in you, understanding you and bringing you to the table.
Speaker CBecause when you're connected to you, sales.
Speaker DActually get either easier, sales convert, people are attracted to you, you become a magnet because people trust what feels real.
Speaker DOkay?
Speaker CSo if you're ready to try something.
Speaker DDifferent, if you want to sell with.
Speaker CPeace in your body and profit in.
Speaker DYour business, if you're craving honest growth and sustainable growth, not more noise and not a larger to do list, then.
Speaker CI want you to join me for Rooted Sales.
Speaker DWe're going to talk about a couple of different things that I am incorporating inside of my program.
Speaker CChronically you and profitable.
Speaker CI have redone the curriculum completely in.
Speaker DA lot of different ways and added some more clarity and the importance of connecting to the real you and how.
Speaker CTo incorporate that in however you're showing.
Speaker DUp in your business, in person, online.
Speaker CUsing long form content, which is my.
Speaker DFavorite place to do this and how.
Speaker CIt makes it easier for you to.
Speaker DBuild a sustainable, growing business along with creating community along the way.
Speaker DSo we start June 23rd in the live chat and in the email on June 23rd.
Speaker DYou want to join rooted sales.
Speaker DYou can actually go in the show notes right now and join.
Speaker DSo I hope this episode kind of gave you some hope in how you can decide to show up in your business and also in your life.
Speaker DYou know, we've read a lot of books about, you know, how businesses and times of change and shift really evolve, right?
Speaker CWe all have to evolve.
Speaker DBut I have seen you can evolve, but you still have values and things.
Speaker CThat matter for you, lived experiences that.
Speaker DReally are part of who you are.
Speaker CAnd if you're not leaning into those things, if you're not leaning into your.
Speaker DStrength and trying to feel how to leverage and amplify those things and you're just taking on everybody else's coat if you will, it's harder to see how you can succeed because you're just going to be like everybody else.
Speaker CAnd for those of us living with.
Speaker DChronic illness, we aren't.
Speaker DBut we are, right?
Speaker CWe kind of are.
Speaker DWe all are trying to figure out how to do this sustainably, but we don't have to do it alone.
Speaker DWe don't have to do it at the expense of our health and our happiness.
Speaker DYou can find a way and this is going to help you.
Speaker DSo I hope you join us inside of Rooted Sales.
Speaker CEach day I'll share one short, powerful.
Speaker DVoice note live to help you reconnect.
Speaker CWith yourself and your sales.
Speaker CYou'll walk away knowing exactly how to.
Speaker DStart showing up again, rooted in your story and your values, not just the strategy.
Speaker DI am so excited for this.
